Forbes names Unum Top 40 of Best Employers for Diversity
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (April 28, 2022) – For the third year, employee benefits provider Unum (NYSE:UNM) is one of Forbes 2022 America’s Best Employers for Diversity. The company ranks 39 out of 500 companies, moving up 34 spots from last year.
In the insurance category, Unum makes the top 10 list again, moving up one spot to #7.
“An appreciation for differences is part of Unum’s foundation,” said Ericka DeBruce, Chief Inclusion & Diversity Officer. “We foster belonging and inclusion to support our collective efforts to create an equitable culture, inclusive teams, and a representative workforce. This leads to true diversity of thought.”
Last year, the company’s Inclusion & Diversity team restructured its Employee and Business Networks to foster belonging and uniqueness across the enterprise. Since July 2020, Unum has contributed over $700,000 to programs focused on equality, economic justice, and civic engagement through the Social Justice Fund. For example, Unum supports AbleSC, a post-secondary center that helps youth with disabilities secure jobs, and Project Return, a re-entry program in Nashville helping people who were formerly incarcerated.
The Best Employers for Diversity is presented by Forbes and Statista Inc., the world-leading statistics portal and industry ranking provider. Over 60,000 U.S. employees were surveyed in companies with a minimum of 1,000 employees. The evaluation was based on four different criteria:
- Direct recommendations: Employees were asked to give their opinions on a series of statements regarding Age, Gender, Ethnicity, Disability, LGBTQIA+ & General Diversity in their current workplace. The recommendations of women, elders, and ethnic minorities were weighted higher than the non-minority groups.
- Indirect Recommendations: Participants were also given the chance to evaluate other employers in their respective industries that stand out either positively or negatively with regard to diversity. Only the recommendations of minority groups were considered.
- Diversity Among Top Executives/Board and Diversity Engagement Indicators were also part of the evaluation.
