Austin Hatcher Foundation for Pediatric Cancer Receives $175,000 Gift from Unum Group

Chattanooga, TN (October 20, 2023) - The Austin Hatcher Foundation for Pediatric Cancer will use a $175,000 gift from Unum Group in celebration of the company’s 175th anniversary to help address the long-lasting consequences of cancer and cancer treatment on pediatric patients and their families. Through this gift, Unum Group is highlighting the impact of Austin Hatcher’s innovative and action-oriented health and mental wellbeing programs on some of Chattanooga’s youngest and most health-compromised community members. This gift also underscores Unum Group’s commitment to a caring spirit and helping communities thrive through life’s challenging moments.

“We are honored to be chosen as one of Unum Group’s 175th commemorative gift recipients and are thankful for their unwavering dedication to the community and support of our work," stated Amy Jo Osborn, president & CEO, The Austin Hatcher Foundation. “The diagnosis of cancer and its long-lasting impacts is extremely stressful and traumatizing for patients and families. We are thrilled that Unum’s grant will allow us to continue to provide children and families with psychosocial care, at no cost to families, in an effort to help address these impacts and help them thrive in the future.”

Childhood cancer patients are at an increased risk of late-effect neurocognitive deficits, as a result of treatments including chemo and radiation. This can include a decline in IQ, academic skills, and career attainment later in life. Since childhood cancer survival rates are at nearly 90%, the number of children who are experiencing life-long impacts also grows each year.

“We thank the Austin Hatcher Foundation for their lasting impact in Chattanooga and on families affected by childhood cancer,” said Rick McKenney, Unum Group president and CEO. “This commemorative gift is just one of many ways Unum Group is teaming up with our employees to celebrate our 175-year history and creating stronger communities.”

Throughout the company’s 175th anniversary year, Unum Group is celebrating the critical role organizations, like the Austin Hatcher Foundation, play in the community by complementing grants with 175 volunteer and giving opportunities.
